Busy day for Mineola volunteers
Mineola Firefighters had a busy day on Thursday October11, 2007. The first alarm was at 9:53 AM for an Automatic Fire Alarm on Old Country Road. This was investigated and found to be unfounded. At 11:35AM Mineola received an Auto Accident at Willis Ave/ Jericho Tpke. Second Assistant Chief Joseph Pratt arrived to find a three car motor vehicle accident with a fuel spill. The vehicles were stabilized and the battery was disconnected to remove a potential ignition source. The spill was contained and Mineola firefighters returned to quarters to re-stock the apparatus. At 1230hrs Mineola was alerted for another Automatic Fire Alarm on Station Rd. This alarm was found to be caused by smoking in a restroom.
As the evening approached the National Weather Service issued a Tornando Warning for Nassau County. As Mineola Firefighters received word of the potential storm they began heading to the firehouse ready to answer the alarm. At 5:13PM Chief Pratt monitored a Nassau County Police call for people trapped at the underpass on Elm Place and Jericho Tpke. The caller stated that a baby was in the auto. Chief Pratt immediately responded to the scene and advised FIRECOM to notify the department of the water rescue. Upon arrival Chief Pratt found two vehicles partially submerged. He insured that none of the occupants were injured and that there was no child in the car. Chief of Department Scott Holliday also responded to the scene and coordinated the rescue effort. Mineola Firefighters entered the flood waters and cleared the drains to allow the flood waters to recede. With the assistance of the Nassau County Police Emergency Services Unit, the vehicles were removed from the roadway. As this situation was being handled, FIRECOM notified the Chief that several more calls were coming in for flooding conditions. Chief Holliday directed that all Mineola Firefighters standby at Headquarters and he began delegating assignments throughout the village.
At 5:16PM Chief Holliday assigned First Assistant Chief Rob Connolly to a call for cars submerged at Jericho Turnpike and Herricks Road. Upon arrival Chief Connolly found a Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corp (MVAC) unit on scene attempting to block the road. There were multiple cars submerged and more cars attempting to cross the flooded roadway. Mineola Auxiliary Police Officers also responded to the scene and closed the roadway. Together the three volunteer agencies removed the trapped occupants of these vehicles and pushed the disabled cars out of the roadway. At 5:17PM Chief Pratt was assigned to the Mineola Library for a Flooding condition. The Chief found water cascading down an exterior staircase and entering the basement. Engine 162 responded to the scene and using sandbags and a de-watering pump they attempted to mitigate the damage. Responding firefighters also located interior floor drains which were opened up to handle some of the water. An additional vehicle was found submerged at Sayville Rd and Jackson Ave. Heavy Rescue 1610 responded to this scene and Mineola firefighters removed this vehicle from the flood waters. They then secured the scene to prevent further incidents.
In the span of approximately twelve hours The Mineola Fire Department handled seven alarms. These volunteer firefighters answered the call to duty, despite the fact that for some the damage was hitting home. There were no reported injuries during this event and Mineola firefighters were released from duty at 6:30 PM
