Mineola FD Salutes Firefighter Serving in Iraq

On Sunday August 24, 2008 the members of the Mineola Fire Department assembled at HQ to pay homage to their brother Firefighter Matt Doyle who is serving his country as an active duty member of the United States Army, currently deployed in Iraq. The Firefighters were joined by Firefighter Doyle’s Parents John and Nancy Doyle as well as Mayor Jack Martins and the Mineola Village Board. The purpose of the gathering was to unveil the Military Service flags which the Mineola Fire Department proudly displays on the “First Due” apparatus from each company.

Back in 2003 Matt had a desire to serve his community and followed through by joining Engine Company Three. In the summer of 2004 Matt decided to expand his service to our community and country by entering the United States Army. His MOS is Infantry and his current assignment has him patrolling the streets of Mosul in Northwest Iraq to provide a “Police Presence”. Matt’s diligence to duty has resulted in his appointment to the rank of Sergeant. He recently returned home to visit his family and he commented to his father that he is “embarrassed at the attention he personally receives for doing what he considers a service to his country.” Matt hopes that the community recognizes the commitment that all of the service men and women currently overseas are providing. John Doyle commented that he is very proud of his son but he concurs with Matt’s statements. Mr. Doyle remarked that he feels that it is a pity that these types of recognition are newsworthy. He believes that all communities should be recognizing their deployed neighbors almost as a matter of routine. That being said, the Doyle family is thankful that Matt’s firefighting family continues to support the efforts of Matt and the U.S. Military. In the spring of 2008 Sgt. Doyle re-enlisted for another six year commitment. Matt is scheduled to return to Mineola for a leave in the spring of 2009. Undoubtedly, he will spend a lot of this time with his family and friends but you can be sure he will be answering fire alarms as well.
