Walter Langer Firefighter of the Year

On Saturday May 31 the Mineola Fire Department held its 2008 Installation of Officers. Mayor Jack Martins swore in the line officers of Engine One, Truck Two and Engine Three. First Assistant Chief Robert Connolly and Second Assistant Chief Joseph Pratt came forward with their families to take the oath of office. Finally, Chief Scott C. Holliday stood before the department to be sworn in as the 50th Chief of Department in the village’s history. Chief Holliday went right to work acknowledging those members who have provided exemplary service to the Department. Ex-Captain Michael Freitas was called forward to receive his Ex-Captains award. The Chief thanked him for his service to Engine Company Three. First Lieutenant Carl Nunziata was also called up to receive his 25 year award. Carl’s dedication to Truck Company Two resulted in his peers electing him to the rank of First Lieutenant. Firefighting continues to be a family affair in the Nunziata house with his Son Carl T. Nunziata serving in Truck Two and son Joseph Nunziata serving in the Juniors. Ladies Auxiliary President Flore Rowe came forward to announce the 2008 Lady of the year. This year’s recipient was Vice President Rosanne Ruppel. The culmination of the evening’s festivities was the announcement of the Mineola Fire Department Firefighter of the year.

Chief Holliday was honored to announce Ex-Chief Walter J. Langer as the Fire Council’s selection for 2008 Firefighter of the Year. Walter has been a valuable member of the department since 1962. During that time he has risen through the line officer and administrative ranks of Company 2. From 1988 – 1990 Walt lead Company Two as Captain. In 1997 Walter was elected Chief of Department. He led the department through 1999. Chief Langer was a Department delegate to the First Battalion and a member of the First Battalion Emergency Operations Center. He was selected to be the Chairman of the First Battalion and the First Battalion Commissioner in 2007. As Commissioner, Walter assists not only Mineola but also the 10 other departments in our battalion. Walter has served the Mineola Fire Department as an integral member of several apparatus committees and has been instrumental in the training and operation of the air trailer. Walter has continued to exhibit outstanding dedication to Truck Two as an Ex-Captain and Ex-Chief. His service was repeatedly recognized as he was voted Truck Two Firefighter of the year in 1992 and 2003. Walter also found time to assist the Junior Fire Department and mentor these future firefighters. Walter is a Vietnam War veteran and a retired member of the Nassau County Police Department. His contributions to the Department and the community go above and beyond the average fire department member. Chief Langer’s work ethic and commitment to service will serve as a role model for our aspiring leaders to follow.
