Old Westbury, NY - Heavy rain didn't stop the Mineola
Fire Dept. from battling it's newest fight... Pancreatic
Cancer. Team MFD joined thousands at Old Westbury
Gardens for the Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Research
Walk.
Mineola's bravest trekked in memory of Ex- Chief
Walter Langer. Langer died last month of Pancreatic
Cancer. Two classic Mineola fire trucks lined the
beginning of the walk, Company 2's 1937 Diamond T
Floodlight and Company 1's 19__ Ward LaFrance.
Langer's red helmet and turnout coat rested on the
floodlight as thousands walked by.
Grey skies dumped heavy rain on the team. Splashing
along paths, the walkers passed through woodlands,
green lawns and world-class gardens. The magnificent
Westbury House stood as the walks centerpiece.
The walks distance was cut short due to severe
weather. Soaked walkers, returned to Mineola
satisfied that they had done their part by to help
others battling this disease.
Organizers expect the walk generated more than $1
million for Pancreatic Cancer Research.
